Canada’s Health Workforce Well-Being Plan focuses on the following six priority areas.

Creating positive work environments
Supportive work and learning environments foster collaboration and well-being. These environments support psychological safety, policies that ensure respect and protection, and efforts to mitigate burnout. These practices are essential for health care workers to deliver high-quality care and feel fulfilled.

Investing in research and measurement
Data and research play a crucial role in driving change. This priority ensures robust data collection and research are used to assess workforce well-being and inform improvements. It focuses on developing relevant metrics, identifying evidence-based strategies, and operationalizing research findings.

Supporting mental health & reducing stigma
Addressing mental health challenges is central to improving well-being. This priority aims to reduce the stigma around seeking mental health support and ensure access to resources. It emphasizes self-care, creating supportive environments, and implementing policies that enhance mental health support.

Minimizing administrative burden
Administrative tasks can be overwhelming. Simplifying them allows health care professionals to focus on patient care. This priority seeks to streamline documentation and workflow processes by improving health information systems and adopting new policies to reduce administrative burdens.

Institutionalizing well-being as a core value
Making well-being a permanent, central value will help ensure lasting change. This priority emphasizes embedding well-being into organizational policies, culture, and operational and strategic decision-making. It includes assessing workload, encouraging leave policies and providing professional development opportunities.

Recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce
Building a diverse and inclusive workforce is vital to the future. This priority promotes recruitment strategies that address diversity gaps, retention in rural and underserved areas, and professional development and mentorship programs to ensure health care workers feel supported.
